Royal Belum & Pulau Banding
Royal Belum is a remote rainforest and lake adventure in northern Perak, reached by boat from the public jetty at Pulau Banding. From Kuala Lumpur, allow roughly 5–6 hours by road depending on traffic, weather and rest stops. A rental car is the most flexible way to reach the jetty, but this is best planned as an overnight or multi-day trip rather than a rushed day return.
WHAT TO SEE
Pre-book a licensed tour, resort or houseboat package that arranges the required Royal Belum entry permit and nature guide. Depending on the confirmed itinerary and conditions, activities may include a Lake Temenggor boat journey, rainforest trekking, birdwatching, a Rafflesia site, salt licks, waterfalls or a respectful Orang Asli village visit. Sightings and flower blooms are never guaranteed. Follow the guide, wildlife, conservation and photography rules at all times.
SUGGESTED SELF-DRIVE ROUTE
Leave Kuala Lumpur early and use the North–South Expressway towards Kuala Kangsar. Continue through Sauk, Lenggong and Gerik, then follow the East–West Highway to Pulau Banding. Refill the car, buy essentials and take a proper rest in Gerik before the remote final section. Park only in the designated visitor area at the public jetty or your confirmed resort, check in with the operator and complete the boat safety briefing. Stay at least one night, and schedule the return drive in daylight.

Keep a valid toll-payment method ready and confirm the latest route, jetty meeting point and departure time before leaving. The Gerik–Pulau Banding section is hilly, winding and may have limited lighting, phone coverage, fuel and roadside services. Do not speed, overtake blindly or drive when exhausted. Watch for wildlife crossing, fallen branches, fog and heavy rain; never stop on the roadway for animals or photographs. If weather affects the boat or trail, follow the operator’s decision and never enter closed areas. Do not leave valuables visible in the parked car.

A dependable sedan or compact SUV is suitable for the normal paved route; four-wheel drive is not usually required to reach Pulau Banding.
